. . .

National news has never gotten better these days. Sometimes, I wish it’s Noah’s time once again so all of us will be wiped out from this world and a better generation will begin anew.

Why can’t those people in the government realize how much damage they have caused our country, especially the poor? While they are taking their time blaming and pointing fingers at each other, prices of prime commodities are rising, so high that most of those below poverty line are finding it more difficult to survive. It is as if as all those in power think only of themselves. They can afford to hold many sessions in congress because they don’t have to worry about their food, their job, their family’s financial security and stability.

Just in the recent voting for impeachment, all congressmen gave speeches before they expressed if they are for or against the trial. When I saw it, I thought I was watching an oratorical contest or perhaps an oral defense for a thesis. Why cannot they just state their name, their vote and their reason in not more than three short sentences? They are spending much with all these proceedings. They do these while more and more are starving. Maybe, it’s really true that there are people with no hearts and consciences and these people happened to be the people in our government. It seems that they all want to head our country, but when elected, what do they do? They do all their best for them and for their family and friends. Whatever happened to service in their job as public servants? Actually, it should not even be mere service, but selfless service.

Oh Lord, is it not really our country’s destiny to have good leaders? We had Marcos. He started his regime well. But towards the end of his presidency, he contributed to the downfall of the nation. Then, our potential leader, Ninoy Aquino who could have probably brought us to a better life was assassinated. One after another, each presidential term produced more dishonest and corrupt officials. I voted for Raul Roco in the last election. Even after the news about his frail health, I still voted for him, knowing that if he wins, he will not let our country down. But, if ever he got elected, we may all be at a loss now after his death.

Most war-stricken countries before have risen from their miserable state. We need not look far; in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is an example. Yes, there are wars and conflicts in our country particularly in Mindanao but I think it is not as grave as what happened to the countries that have had seemingly endless wars. But where are we now compared to these countries? It’s true that we should not put all the blame on the leaders but in our current system, these few people in power are depended on by millions and unfortunately, very unfortunately they do not do their part well. If the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future are true, I pray that they unceasingly haunt all selfish and greedy politicians until they become fit to lead a battered nation.
