opms reign!

back in the early 90s, i used to listen to an fm station's top 30 countdown every saturday, 4 pm. like any teenager that time, i always have a blank cassette tape to record the hits and i have skillfully mastered waiting for the last word from the dj before i let go of the pause button so the play and record buttons (which were previously pressed) will start doing their job just in time for the first note of the song.

aside from songs popularized by AngTV like hotstepper and come baby come, i recorded songs of francis m., introvoys, afterimage, alamid, color it red, orient pearl, eraserheads and a lot more. if you've noticed, all filipino artists who made it big that time.

i don't know if i became too busy growing up, that i eventually gave up religiously following the countdown. i also don't know if GATT had something to do with it, but there suddenly was an influx of a lot of songs from artists abroad. i guess also because of the onset of cable tv letting us have access to mtv. it led to some opm bands just having one-hit wonders. it was great that it did not last long. opm bands soon rose to fame again though some needed to change names and band members (i miss the violinist in hungry young poets!). and now, opms are really back and they make it to the country's hit charts again! -- even with maroon 5 and rob thomas around

recording using cassette tapes are nearly obsolete nowadays so i now download songs by kitchie nadal, bamboo, barbie's cradle, mojofly, imago, parokya ni edgar, sugarfree, rivermaya, session road.... :)
